The Case Against Peanut Butter. Why even Organic Peanut Butter is Bad for You
Peanuts contain anti-nutrient lectins
Many legumes, peanuts being one of them, contain anti-nutrient lectins. The lectins are sticky proteins and are very hard to digest, almost impossible. They have been found to get rid of the mucous from the small intestine, being one of the major culprits and cause of numerous autoimmune illnesses such as Crohn’s disease, thyroiditis, IBS, colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis and fibromyalgia. It is well known that most of the foods do contain lectins, but in different concentrations. The legumes and grains have a high concentration of it. Legumes are often the cause of “leaky gut”, an ailment that causes increased inflammation in the gut.
Peanuts are Strong Allergens
Many people suffer form peanut allergy. It is almost an epidemic. Almost fifty percent of children are allergic to peanuts. Peanuts are one of the ingredients known to be the most common allergens for humans. This is because they contain a few proteins that most of the other foods do not. So, when these proteins enter the human body, the immune system recognizes these proteins contained in peanuts as a potential threat and it produces antibodies to counter the perceived danger to the body. This is the way in which peanuts work as allergens.
Peanuts Cause Inflammation
Peanuts are rich in omega-6 fats and these then disturb the body’s omega 3:6 ratio. Near 30 percent of the fatty acids the peanut butter contains are omega-6 fatty acids, linoleic acids. Increased consumption of omega-6 fatty acids can lead to inflammation and higher risk pf cardiovascular disease. The body only needs these omega-6 fatty acids in the ratio 3:1, omega-6 and omega-3 respectively.
Additionally, peanuts are one of the most contaminated crops with pesticides. If you still want to consume peanut butter, at least buy organic one.
Because of all the potential dangers the peanut butter has to your health, you should avoid it and you can also substitute it with another, healthier option, such as almond butter, or butter made of some other raw nuts.
